- Screening is not generally practiced in North America. There are three approaches to early detection.
- • Your awareness of typical signs and symptoms and your calling them to the attention of your physician.
- • A careful examination of the head and neck by your doctor, including an examination of the larynx with the aid
- of a mirror (indirect laryngoscopy) or a scope.
- • Your dentist is in an excellent position to call your attention to suspicious lesions in the mouth such as the
- premalignant lesion called leukoplakia (white patches). Many oral cancers are discovered by dentists.
